THE CIRCLE

September 2001
Boston, USA
Performance 'The Circle'
Performed by: Branko Guli, Yin Peet, Milan Kohut

On the streets of Boston, on the pavement in front of the International Cultural Center, we created an installation in the shape of two circles which overlap. Circles and their overlap are colored in blue, white and red- the basic colors of both USA and Croatian flags. In micro-conditions on the street pavement, a scene of terror and violence over people's lives is recreated, while, on the other hand, that same scene symbolizes the rebirth of life.

The performance was done in the context of the war activities around the world and the terrorist act on the American soil (9/11) and it symbolically showed the futility of destruction and ruining of people's lives- a principle which characterizes the patriarchal society, opposing it to the female principle which emotionally and physically bears that load giving birth to new life.

NA ULICAMA BOSTONA, ISPRED INTERNACIONALNOG KULTURNOG CENTRA, IZRADJENA JE NA PLOCNIKU INSTALACIJA U OBLIKU DVA KRUGA KOJI SE PREKLAPAJU. KRUGOVI I NJIHOV ISJECAK SU OBOJANI (PLAVO, BIJELO, CRVENO) OSNOVNIM BOJAMA SAD I HRVATSKE. U MIKRO UVJETIMA NA ULICNOM PLOCNIKU SIMBOLICKI JE ODIGRANA SCENA TERORA I NASILJA NAD ZIVOTIMA LJUDI, A SA DRUGE STRANE I OBNAVLJANJE ZIVOTA.

IZVEDBA JE, U KONTEKSTU RATNIH ZBIVANJA U SVIJETU I TERORISTICKOG AKTA NA TLU SAD (SEPTEMBAR 11), SIMBOLICKI PRIKAZALA BESMISLENOST DESTRUKCIJE I UNISTAVANJA LJUDSKIH ZIVOTA, PRINCIPA KOJI KARAKTERIZIRA PATRIJARHALNO DRUSTVO I NASUPROT TOME, ZENE KOJA EMOCIONALNO I FIZICKI PODNSI TAJ TERET PONOVNO OBNAVLJAJUCI ZIVOT.
